WELCOME
In the name of God: Father, Son + and Holy Spirit.
Amen
Happy Valentine’s Day.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid, your desire is our love for you and our love for neighbor – in other words, that all days may be Valentine's Days. Help us today O God of love. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name.
Amen
(Confession based on 1 Corinthians 13)
God of Love
We confess we are sometimes impatient, and often unkind. We are quick to envy, and find subtle ways to boast. There are times we are rude, and lift ourselves up as we put others down. Loving God teach us to love
God of Love
We confess that we are quickly angered. We are quick to record how often we’ve been wronged. There are times we celebrate the misfortune of others. Loving God teach us to love.
God of Love
We confess that we put ourselves first. We’re reluctant to give, we are slow to sacrifice, there are times we hesitate to protect. Loving God teach us to love
When we are tempted to judge, to assume the worst…May love remind us to trust
When we are tempted to despair, to assume all is lost…May love remind us to hope
When we are tempted to give up, to assume it will never happen… May love remind us to persevere. Loving God teach us to love, in the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen
ABSOLUTION
HYMN 631 – “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”, Vs 1-2
Sing to Tune BEACH SPRING
1 Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heav'n, to earth come down!
Fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation, enter ev'ry trembling heart.
2 Breathe, oh, breathe thy loving Spirit into ev'ry troubled breast;
let us all in thee inherit; let us find thy promised rest.
Take away the love of sinning; Alpha and Omega be;
end of faith, as its beginning, set our hearts at liberty.
Text: Charles Wesley, 1807-1788; Music: The Sacred Harp, Philadelphia, 1844; arr. Selected Hymns, 1985
CHILDREN’S SERMON – Pastor Dave
FIRST READING: 2 Corinthians 4:1-7
Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. 2 We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practice cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. 6 For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
7 But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION HYMN 392 – “Alleluia! Sing to Jesus”, Vs 1 & 4
1 Alleluia! Sing to Jesus; his the scepter, his the throne;
Alleluia! his the triumph, his the victory alone.
Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion thunder like a mighty flood:
"Jesus out of ev'ry nation has redeemed us by his blood."
4 Alleluia! King eternal, Lord omnipotent we own;
Alleluia! born of Mary, earth your footstool, heav'n your throne.
As within the veil you entered, robed in flesh, our great high priest,
here on earth both priest and victim in the eucharistic feast.
Text: William C. Dix, 1837-1898, alt.: Music:Roland H. Prichard, 1811-1887
GOSPEL: Mark 9:2-10
The Holy Gospel according to Mark, the 9th chapter.
Glory to you, O Lord!
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. 4And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” 8Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.
9As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead could mean.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ!
SERMON – Pastor Vern
HYMN 315 – “How Good, Lord, to Be Here!”
1 How good, Lord, to be here! Your glory fills the night;
your face and garments, like the sun, shine with unborrowed light.
2 How good, Lord, to be here! your beauty to behold
where Moses and Elijah stand, your messengers of old.
3 Fulfiller of the past and hope of things to be,
we hail your body glorified and our redemption see.
4 Before we taste of death, we see your kingdom come;
we long to hold the vision bright and make this hill our home.
5 How good, Lord, to be here! Yet we may not remain;
but since you bid us leave the mount, come with us to the plain.
Text: Joseph A. Robinson, 1858-1933, alt.; Music: W. Mercer, The Church Psalter and Hymn Book, 1854
NICENE CREED
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION WITH HYMN 838 – “Beautiful Savior”, Vs 1-3
Guided by Christ made known to the nations, let us offer our prayers for the church, the world, and all people in need.
Beautiful Savior, King of creation, Son of God and Son of Man!
Truly I'd love thee, truly I'd serve thee, light of my soul, my joy, my crown.
Light of our souls, our joy and crown, with love for Thee, we pray that the gospel may be proclaimed in word and deed throughout the world so that all may come to know and experience you as the blessed Son of God and Son of Man. We also pray for Christ-centered communities of faith far and near, and for all who show the face of Christ throughout the world.
King of Creation, we pray for your good creation that we know, see, and treasure, and for all those parts of the cosmos which we can only imagine. We pray for the sun, moon and stars; life forming in the dark earth and ocean deep; mountains, clouds and storms, and creatures and solar systems, seen and unseen, and for the Holy Spirit’s guidance in our stewardship of your good creation.
Fair are the meadows, fair are the woodlands, robed in flow'rs of blooming spring;
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, he makes our sorrowing spirit sing.
Lord Jesus, purer and fairer, you make our sorrowing spirits sing. Today we lift up all who sorrow because of loss, illness, and other painful concerns. We pray for your healing, hope, comfort and wholeness be upon Jon, Sandie, Martha, Liam, Brent, Fay Nell, Linda, Dan, Gail, Judy, and Sarah. We also pray for those responsible for safety and protection in our world, nation and community including our nation’s military members and their families; for emergency responders and security guards; for attorneys and advocates; for civil servants and leaders of governments, that they witness to mercy and justice throughout the world.
We also lift up to you O God this congregation, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, and the congregations where we come from and others that we are close to. We pray for all our brothers and sisters and our families, as well as all our companions in this worshiping community. We pray for loved ones who cannot be with us this day, and for guidance during struggles we face, that God’s glory is revealed around and among us. Holy God, hear the prayers of your people, spoken, sung, or silent, for the sake of the one who dwells among us, your Son, Jesus Christ our Beautiful Savior.
Fair is the sunshine, fair is the moonlight, bright the sparkling stars on high;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer than all the angels in the sky.
LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
BENEDICTION
Go in peace. Serve the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
